Good to know before you go
Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum
Free street parking along Niles Boulevard and in the side streets behind it. Antique-fair weekends take every space in the district, so arrive early or park up the hill.
Niles Depot Museum
Use the district street parking and walk over; the depot's own apron is small and often occupied by volunteers unloading.
Vallejo Flour Mill
A small lot serves Vallejo Mill Historical Park off the corner. It fills on weekends and the overflow is street parking back in the district.
Niles Canyon
Formal turnouts are few and small. Use them only to let traffic past or to look at the creek, and never leave a wheel on the asphalt.
Dresser
Watch the north side of the canyon for the old track bed. Once you spot it, you will follow it the rest of the way to Sunol.
The Niles Canyon ghost
If you want the atmosphere without the risk, drive the canyon at dusk rather than midnight. The light does most of the work.
Brightside
Slow down rather than stopping. Whatever is parked in the yard is visible from the road for a good few seconds.
Golden Gate Railroad Museum
The best way to see this equipment is to ride behind it. Book a heritage train out of Sunol or Niles instead of trying to look at the yard.
Niles Canyon Railway
Free parking at the Sunol depot, which fills completely on operating days. The village street parking beyond it is limited and residential.
Sunol Water Temple
A small gravel area serves the temple grounds off Paloma Way. Do not block the gate; this is still an operating water utility site.
Thomas Foxwell Bachelder Barn
None — this is a private residence on a narrow road. Look and keep moving.
Pleasanton Ridge Regional Park
The main staging area is off Foothill Road with a modest paid lot that fills by mid-morning at weekends.
Verona
Keep an eye on the west side for the country club gates coming up — that is what the name was really about.
Hacienda del Pozo de Verona
None available — the site is a private country club with a gated entrance.
Downtown Pleasanton
Free public lots sit one block off Main Street on both sides, and they are almost always a better bet than circling for a street space.
